As a Republican party we attempt to staff each polling place for the general election with poll watchers to make sure proper election procedures are followed and that no illegal electioneering is occurring. However, our first line of defense is vigilant and dedicated Precinct Election Officials (PEO’s). For the upcoming election on November 8th, the Black Hawk County Elections Office is required to assign PEO’s in a balanced manner between Republicans and Democrats (with some No Party officials). This means that we need to have at least 2-3 Republicans for each of the 63 precincts in Black Hawk County. If you are not already a PEO, I want to encourage you to consider becoming one. It is a long day (usually 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.), but it goes by quickly. Besides being busy helping voters, you have a chance to get to know the other election officials and the voters at the precinct where you work.

PEO’s are paid positions. They are also required to attend several training sessions. There are usually 2 – 2 hour training sessions before each election.

You may be assigned to work in a precinct other than the one where you normally vote. When you apply to become a PEO, you can indicate your precinct preference. Obviously, it is easier for the Elections Office to fill all PEO positions if you are more flexible.

By serving as a Precinct Election Official, you are helping your community, helping to safeguard our election integrity and having a good and productive time. This year, the process for applying is easier than ever. You can now apply on-line to become a PEO in Black Hawk County by completing this form here.

Thank you for considering this important civic duty. If you have any questions, you may contact Mike Bayer ( or the Black Hawk County Elections Office at 319-833-3007.
